LINKIN AND VERTIGO
D&B time!
Here's a local duo who seemed to have exploded and then landed in every good D&B night in Sydney. Read on to find out a little more about these bass heads!
So we’ve seen you guys on a lot of line–ups around Sydney, how long ago did you decide to make the DJ transition from your bedrooms to the Clubs?
V: Thankfully we both got our first gigs within a year of starting to mix. All the mixtape peddling paid off fairly fast. We also played individually there for a bit but decided to play back to back in order to play out more often.
How did you guys meet each other?
L: my ex-girlfriends brother was a good mate of Vertigo at the time, and I started getting into dnb just after I finished school, inevitably we ended up hanging a couple times at gigs and kick ons, an pretty much just continued to party an mix every weekend. we also went to the same school with vertigo in the year above me, but we weren't mates at school.
What kind of music can we expect from one of your sets?
L: Plenty of quality drum and bass, you can expect the full spectrum between the two of us, depends on the crowd though, if we feel people are wanting it hard or whatever, we'll probably roll it a bit more to what we think will work.
V: I think caters for the more commercial elements whereas I play more tech and minimal which is more for the niche crowd.
Where was the best crowd you’ve had?
L: I think there has been a few standouts, though the most notable would probably be the second ever gig we did for Bass Drop which was London Elektricity in June 2009, fucking immense, first insane gig think we played, it was at Favela in Kings Cross. It was over sold, sweat pouring of the roof, sick vibes, sick people straight up crazy! Chase & Status at Chinese Laundry In February 2010 was also pretty memorable, people going fucking crazy in there. There has been a ton of dope local gigs we've done for No Frills and The Collective too!
This is a question for both of you guys individually – Whats your favorite track at the moment?
L: Too hard to answer for one track, really feeling State Of Mind's remix of 'Dutchies' by Shapeshifter as an epic tune, get great reactions from that, but there is so much good stuff coming out from alot of good producers, ton of SPY stuff, Culture Shock, Original Sin, Noisia, Rockwell all coming out with good stuff, Octane & DLR got sum dope stuff about to come out. too much!
V: SPY - Stormtrooper. Badass. Also we both are really feeling local fella Royalston whose got some sick tunes coming out on Hospital and Medschool.
Weirdest request you had?
L: A girl asked me to play Pitbull when we were warming up for Alix Perez, I don't think I have had anything too wack. We've gotten Christina Aguilera (Clipz remix) requests when doing radio once.
V: I got a girl asking for The Potbelleez on the top floor of The Bourbon.
Artist, band or DJ, dead or alive that you would do anything to see live…
L: I still haven't seen Metallica. maybe led zeppelin or definitely Jimmy Hendrix would be insane. Andy C when he was like 18 would have been interesting.
V: Icicle
how would you change the Sydney club scene at the moment?
L: More people taking notice of dnb. To have a scene as healthy as Perth would be wicked.
And finally, whats next for Linken & Vertigo?
L: Solid focus on production, hopefully play all over Australia, an push it as far as possible.
