-INTERVIEW WITH FREQ NASTY-

I was lucky enough to play the same night as Freq Nasty at a club in Sydney recently, and, awesome guy that he is, he agreed to do an interview with me for the blog a few weeks later! So here we are folks, the man himself talks Dubstep, the LA music scene and just how he keeps that medusa hair in check...

1. Tell us a bit about how your music has evolved over the coarse of your career.

I started out really diverse in the 90's in London as I like all kinds of music, rock, dub, eastern music, death metal.... there's "good" music in any genre if you want to spend the time sniffing it out. I ended up honing in on one sound as back then the electronic scene had become very genre segregate, the opposite of it's rave roots, and this is the sounds that eventually got called  'Nu Skool Breaks' which is what I came to be known for in the late 90's and early 2000's. I was  making tunes that we're crossing into the UK garage and 2-step scene so I was watching garage turn into Dubstep and moved into playing and making that thru the mid 2000's but now find myself making and playing heavy Drumstep and Glitchop vibes mixed with electronic Dancehall, and anything else that with mad bass. I'll throw in some Dubstep too to keep the kids happy :)... Just good Bass music.

2. What country are you living in right now? What's the Dubstep scene like there?

IN the US and Dubstep is HUUUUGE there . They get it because Hiphop was so big and in a similar tempo range. Great to see  !

3. What programs and pluggins are you using to write your music?

Logic Pro , Native instruments and Universal Audio and thats pretty much it.

4. Which artist/band/dj dead or alive would you give anything to see live?

Tom Waits

5. You're a bit of a veteran... In your opinion, how has the bass music scene changed over the years? Is it better or worse?

Its amazing right now , not necessarily better, just different. I love the fact that you can play whatever you want and that now I can just play"BASS" as a genre and not have to be limited by tempos or scenes. It's been a long time coming.

6. You've got one of the best hairstyles I've ever seen. Is it hard work to maintain?

No in fact its a total lack of maintenance that make sit possible :)

7. What do you love most about your job?

Getting to meet so many people that are incredibly passionate about music that they want to share that experience and making other people have a good time . Promoting and playing underground music is something you do for love .

8. Craziest dancefloor antics you've ever seen from behind the decks?

Someone hanging from the top of a 90 foot dome by their nipples at Burning Man.

9. Best gig you've ever played?

The gigs I'm playing right now are always the best for me . I love playing new music and getting to tour with MartyParty and Opiuo on the Monsters of Bass Tour right now in the US is wicked! I never seem to stop enjoying what I do .....
