- FROM BULGARIA WITH LOVE -

I was very lucky to get in touch with Bulgarian Producer/DJ Balkansky. Since hearing Excision's Shambhala 2010 mix-tape I was hooked on the track Sundrom. His sound is ambient and heavy at the same time and he has a unique quality that sets him apart. I was so stoked to get this interview, and I'm equally stoked to share it with all of you!

1. Tell us about the Electronic music scene in Bulgaria... what are your likes and dislikes?

Its really getting bigger with every year, so thats what i wanted back in the days and I am happy with the result, but sometimes theres too much fights between crews and different promoters, so the artists are always in the middle of the battlefield. Thats all good on the other hand as it makes the crews bring more quality to the parties.

2. Have you always been making the same type of music or has your style changed over the years?

I originally started playing in a metal band when i was 15 and later on started doing some industrial and experiment with electronic music, but I never kept doing only one style of music over the years.
I used the name Balkansky to cover some of my deeper and more inteligent electronic music productions (trip hop, IDM, dubstep, acid jazz, ethno), but I was doing this kind of sound since I started priducing back in the 1998-2000. I have and another project for deep techno and its called Drum Kid, also Underhill (with Dean Rodell, Current Value, Martina Astner and MC Coppa) which is a project with live vocals covering the darker dubstep - trip hop kinda sound. And ofcaurse Cooh is my name for filthy drum and bass and hardcore crossover heavy beats.

3. What programs and pluggins are you using to make you music?

My main program during the years was Reason, but i am using a lot of Ableton and Nuendo too.
On the plugins side I love all the stuff from Native Instruments and especially Reaktor + few more good stuff around and a lot of free vst plugins.

4. Best gig you ever played?

Its really hard to say, but i think it was the gig in Rotterdam last christmas when i played a back to back set with The Panacea on the PRSPCT XL party for around 2500 people.

5. Which Artist/Band/Producer (dead or alive) would you give anything to see live?

Telefon Tel Aviv, Flanger, Pink Floid and many more....

6. Whats is your favourite tune to relax to?

The sound of the birds and the wind in the trees...but also I love to listen jazz and bossanova and everything from Joal Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

7. Which came first for you, Producing or DJing?

Priducing came first for me and when i had enough of my own music to play I started DJing and enjoying the reactions from my sound.

8. Sundrom is one of my favourite tracks at the moment, when can we expect it to be released?

I just signed it on Dubsaw and I am now doing the track for the flipside then we can go for the release in the next few months..

9. Top 5 tracks to play at the moment...

Nyree - Scream My Name (Balkansky Remix)
Cooh - Helmet
Balkansky & Loop Stepwalker - Sopharma
Culprate - Crash
Underhill - Blind

10. And finally, whats next for Balkansky?

I am now working on a new Balkansky full lenght album featuring Theodosii Spassov and few more Bulgarian musicians and singers. I just finished a new Balkansky album for Ohm Resistance and I am working on lots of new heavy remixes and solo tracks. Also finished an EP with Sinister Souls for Rottun Recordings and working on another EP for Ad Noiseam with Loop Stepwalker.
