AND HERE'S THE INTERVIEW
1. How long have you guys been in the game for, and what genres has your musical journey taken you through?
Individually we have been producing for some time now but as a project we’ve been writing music together for around three years. Joe has been producing since 14 years old, initially it was warp records inspired glitch, electronica and hip hop. Matt has only been into dance music for around 5 years and started off making DnB which eventually turned into dubstep when we combined our musical tastes and ideas. Why dubstep? It was a musical style we both enjoyed which sat somewhere in between the DnB Matt was making and the hip hop/ electronic Joe was making, so initially it was a compromise for both of us but now dubstep is the love of our lives.
2. I love the sound of the "Tainted Dub" EP. Tell us what your influences were coming up with ideas, and how long have you been working on the EP?
When we sat down to write the ep we had so many ideas it was really hard to focus on any, we decided our main aim was to keep it very jump up and club orientated Dubstep whilst trying to be as diverse as we could in terms of the themes/ sound of each track. We wanted to do something quite different to what people are used to hearing from us so the first tune we started was “Locked in” which begins as a hip hop tune with full verses from our Mc maksim. After this tune we decided to keep it more dubstep, “Rising higher” was slightly influenced by our hero’s daft punk, we wanted it to sound quite disco which I hope we have achieved. From there we wrote probably the hardest hitting tune we’ve made to date called “Tears”, this was just to relieve ourselves more than anything, we wanted one really dirty track somewhere on this release. We finished the ep with a more typical Document one sounding Dubstep wobbler, “Ace in the pack”; this tune was the most obvious continuation of what we have done on previous releases. The composition/ production side of the ep came together over a really short period of time, however the mixing and master process on was really tricky on this one, that stuff took a fair bit longer but we’re quite happy with the tracks and sound that we’ve ended up with.
3. You guys are from the most Dub hungry country in the world, how does the rest of Europe and other place you've played compare with the Bass Music scene in the UK?
The UK is our home and Dubstep’s home along with many other underground genres which have inspired us to do what we love, so for that reason alone it will always feel special to play in the UK. From what we’ve experienced, the scene across most of Europe is already thriving; the shows themselves don’t differ a lot from the shows at home, great crowds, great sound systems and enough room to dance! This is all we look for and we enjoy it equally at home or abroad. There is a certain feeling of excitement which surrounds the younger scene you find in European countries like France and Belgium you don’t get so much in the UK these days but the bottom line is we love to play the music we love to people that love it too regardless of where we are at the time.
4. Sydney is pretty damn excited for your show @ Oxford Arts Factory. Can you give us a heads up of what to expect?
A lot of bass madness! We’re developing the set more and more so expect a Dubstep heavy set with hints of other bass music genres round the edges. Hear some of your favourite tunes alongside plenty of dubs from your favourite producers you’ll be snapping up in the months to come!
5. I know you guys must get asked this for every interview, but I've had so many emails from readers wanting me to ask you this... what programs and plug-ins are you guys using to make those sounds?
Well the sequencer we use is Ableton Live; however this is not where the sounds come from but what captures the sounds once we’ve created them. The sounds come from a selection of VST’s, Massive, Vanguard, Razor, FM8 and Strobe along with the occasional hint of the Maelstrom and Thor from propellorhead reason, which we found for us is not ideal for writing complete tunes but fantastic as an addition to the set up we’re using. We don’t personally resample we keep the sounds coming from each synth so we have maximum flexibility throughout the writing process however this is not a very CPU efficient way of doing things. My main advice is concentrate on one synth at a time and don’t use presets, once you’ve mastered one you can move on and start learning the next VST and finally keep checking the sound of your tunes against material by your favourite producers, referencing is crucial to achieve a good sound.
6. Where did the name "Document One" come from?
It was a name Joe was using when writing Electronica in the early days, there is actually an ep called the Document one ep from about 8 years ago floating around somewhere, it was named that because Joe saved the first tune under the default name document 1 and people started using it as an artist name, (the name was almost given to me rather than thought up myself).
When we started writing together we decided to go with the same name as a two piece, basically because we couldn’t settle on the other ideas we were coming up with. Not a very interesting story I’m afraid.
7. If Document One had to live out the rest of their days in one aisle of the supermarket, which aisle would it be?
Matt – definately the sweet aisle! If it’s got pick n mix I’m there! Failing that I think I’m a dairy product kind of guy, I love a good cheese board.
JOE- The spade aisle so I can dig myself out and make my way back to the studio! If I fail I shall make my way to the booze aisle a bit quick, maybe pop by the pick and mix stand to say hello to Matty on my way.
8. This is a question for both of you, If you could see any Band/Artist/Producer live, (they can be dead or alive...but presumably alive while they were playing, although a zombie Kurt Cobain might be cool...), who would it be???
Matt – I think its simple for me…..jimmy Hendrix. Hess the driving force behind any showmanship I have and to not be around when he was at his peak is a real gunshot for me. If I could build a time machine jimi @ isle of white festival would be the first place I go!
I’d be there with Matt! We both love Hendrix more than music itself!
My second stop would be Coltrane live at Birdland and the third would be Autechre anywhere!
9. Give us your top 5 tracks to play...
This is probably going to be a bit out date haha!
1 – Coven – whoopies back in the habit
2- borgore – Hollywood remix
3 – modestep – to the stars (break the noise remix)
4 – nero – crush on you (killsonic remix)
5 – Sebastian – love in motion (skrillex remix)
10. What's your dream gig? Dream venue, dream crowd, dream lineup...GO!
Matt – I think it would be some crazy rave at Wembley stadium in London. Possibly something like every heavy weight in dance music. Tiesto, deadmau5, spor/feed me, pendulum, prodigy, noisia, justice, chemical bro’s the list really could go on forever.
Joe- I’d play the international space station to the crew onboard, I’d be supported by a Zombie Kurt Cobain and Justin Beeber so all the bottles of piss have been thrown before I play just in case, there must be a large supply of piss somewhere on that thing. If this is a bit farfetched I’d get a train to Wembley Stadium to watch a bunch of my heroes play alongside Matty and enjoy the show!
