He's one of Australia's top Dubstep producers hailing from Sydney. PhaseOne started at the bottom and is now releasing his music under one of the most reputable Bass labels out there, Firepower!
I managed to have a chat with PhaseOne this week just before the release of his newest EP "Matter Of Time" which is out NOW.

1. How and when did your musical journey start?
I've been a musician the majority of my life, dabbling in all sorts of instruments, but took the most interest in guitar, keyboard & drums. I played in many bands from age 16 till I was about 22. But I was always interested in production, which I started messing around with when I was 14 making shitty hip hop beats, then went on to writing, recording & producing in my own bands throughout my teens and also studied audio engineering. It wasn't until 2011-2012 when I started getting into electronic music and immediately wanted to delve into the production side.. Anyway 4 years later here we are :)
2. Tell us about you production set up, what DAW and pluggins to you like using?
My studio is pretty basic these days really, because I'm on the go quite frequently I need to take my laptop with me. I run Ableton and mostly use VST's such as Serum, Massive, Sylenth, as well as stock abelton plugins. I've also use an Apogee duet II and a rode NT2 mic for recording!
3. Matter Of Time EP sound insanely huge!... How long have you been working on it and what were you main influences?
I had a release date set for this EP early in the year so always had a deadline to meet. It took me about 4 months roughly to get it all down (whilst doing other projects and remixes too). Main influences I suppose would be my love for metal, which I always try bring my past Influences into what I do now, but also keeping some melodic & atmospheric elements in there which I'm known for.
4. Tell us about your recent international tour, what city couldn't get enough of PhaseOne?
Europe was amazing! One of the greatest experiences of my life. France have the strongest love for Dubstep, Paris was awesome, but Le Bikini in Toulouse (and I'm sure most people who have played there will tell you the same thing) is the best venue in all of EU. All the walls are treated and the sound system is insane, but the people there can't get enough bass music and are wild! By far my favourite show to date!
5. How did you get involved with firepower records?
FP are great with supporting upcoming artists, they're always taking on new names. I simply just submitted my demo (my first EP) which they loved and picked up. I was so impressed by the labels efforts and promo that I've been putting out all my original releases with them.
6. PhaseOne's top 5 tracks to play right now...
- My remix of Rot, still always gets the best reaction, and love playing it out!
- Machinery by Virtual Riot hits hard
- The QUEST remix of 'Alien' by D&F + VR
- Some of the new Barely Alive tunes from their new album, 'Scoop' being my favourite to play out!
- Algo's 'Wild' is a pretty dope tune to play too!
7. If you have to spend a year of your life in an isle of a grocery store, which one would it be?
Confectionary! I'm actually addicted to chocolate haha
9. Out of all the tracks you've written, which was the most fun to write?
Would have to be Rot, purely because it was an honour working with the stems of one of my favourite bands!
10. And finally, whats next for PhaseOne???
EP comes out Oct 30, and will be doing a bit of an Aussie tour off the back of the release. Besides that I'm constantly writing new music, and hope to get overseas again next year!

- PHASEONE REMIXES SOME METAL -
PhaseOne is back with another HUGE remix.
I love metal, so this remix really hits the spot for me. Some metal heads are saying they would like to hear more guitar but they are liking it regardless.
Remixing a metal track is extremely difficult because there is already so much going on in the track. To be able to maintain control of the metal aspect of the song while adding some huge sounding Dubstep synths and drums means you have some serious mixing talent.

- PHASEONE & PROTOHYPE -
Australia's own PhaseOne is on a constant climb at the moment, he just keeps making tunes with the big dawgs! First with Hydraulics then with UK's superstar due Bar9
now most recently with American producer Protohype!!!
This track called "Recon" is a bit of a monster AND its FREE.
People are calling it Riddim... but some disagree with that call. I'll let you be the judge.

- WHY THEY NEED US -
He's back with a big one!
Our good friend PhaseOne has just pulled out another HUGE banger with well known dubstep duo - Bar9.
It has a lot of different musical elements in it, going from regular 70bpm's to 140bpm's back several times over with massive sounding drops. I'm also a fan of that HUGE drum roll at about 2:31.
All round, it's a huge production an is sure to be an anthem as soon as its released!

-ANNNNND.... WE'RE BACK -
Australia's own PhaseOne is very quickly being recognized as one of the best Bass producers out there. From doing a few gigs inter-state to releasing his EP under one of the most well known Bass record labels in the world.
This kid is sure to be a very big deal, very shortly, so keep an eye out for him because I'm sure he'll be coming your way very soon.

Ladies and Gents... PhaseOne's new EP and Interview.
1. Firstly tell us about your music journey, how long ago did you start DJing and producing and how did you get to where you are now?
I've been doing music all my life growing up playing piano & guitar, I got into production when I was about 14 when I would record and produce local bands/artists & my own various projects. I then went on to study Audio Engineering after school and played guitar in many bands. I found my love for electronic music only a few years ago (roughly 2010) when I heard Dubstep for the first time, and Immediately was interested in it from a production point of view. I got Ableton and started messing around. I then started my PhaseOne project and taught myself to DJ. Started getting some local gigs then started getting international support slots and also started doing headline shows at venues around the country. But I was always more interested in the production side of things, and really pushed my music to the global market using social media having my songs featured on some of the biggest music blogs and youtube channels.
2. What's the story with your "Touching the Stars EP." How long did it take you from start to finish and how did you get hooked up with Datsik's Firepower Records?
Touching The Stars EP was a lengthy process, I started the first tune (Burdens) in November 2013 and spent the first half of 2014 writing the rest of the tracks, but was overly picky with them, and were all changed and updated multiple times. It was originally only going to be a 3 track EP (minus Six Feet Under), I shopped it round to a whole bunch of well known labels in August, Firepower came back saying they loved it but would want a 4th track to round out the EP, which luckily I was in the final stages of finishing Six Feet Under, we then signed the deal in October setting a release date for November 11 2014.
3. What DAW and VST's are you using to make you're tunes?
DAW = Ableton 9. VST's I use frequently include NI Massive, FM8, Sylenth, Nexus, Waves Plugins, Camelphat, Ozone5 as well as all the ableton in-built plugins.
4. Who are your 3 biggest inspirations as artists?
Xilent, Au5 & Koven purely because they have such musicality to their sounds and I love the atmospherical and melodic vibes to their tunes, which I'm sure if you listen to my music, you'll hear a similar sort of spacey-ness.
5. Top 3 best gigs you've played to date...
Best show to date was in Brisbane with Datsik, It was not long after I signed the Firepower deal. It was a sold out show, and Troy introduced me on stage as his new signing, was a very surreal moment and the overall vibes were amazing as it is rare (especially in 2014 and in Australia) to see 1500 kids go crazy for Dubstep. Definitely the highlight of my career in terms of performance.
Other mentionable shows include when I played with KOAN Sound in Coffs Harbour at an outdoor festival. And when I played with Netsky and his live band in Melbourne.
6. From watching you live and hearing your mixes, it seems like you're across lots of different genres of bass music. Do you have a preference between DnB or Dubstep? or do you love them both?
I do love both, I think I'm more known for my Dubstep though. In live sets I will change tempo/genre every 15-20 mins or so, even in some of my productions there are tempo changes. I get bored easily so like using a diverse range.
7. If you had do spend the rest of you're life in one aisle of a super market, which one would it be?
I have the biggest sweet tooth, so would have to be the confectionery aisle.
8. Craziest thing you've ever seen while DJing?
To be honest, nothing too crazy. I love seeing people go crazy and even start moshing to the music, but the crazy thing for me is when I see people sing along and recognize songs that I've written.
9. What was your favourite track to write on the new EP?
That's a tie between Initiate & Six Feet Under. They both came to me the quickest and were both a lot of fun to write and I felt that was really the kind of sound which I had been trying to achieve for a while now and believe they both have a uniqueness to them to your standard dubstep sound.
10. And finally... What's next for PhaseOne?
I'm in the middle of doing some EP release shows around Australia, but after that's finished the plan is to hit the studio and try to have another EP release early 2015, and try take this project international later in the year.
