INTERVIEW WITH KOMBAT
So for this week I caught up with one of Sydney's top producers. Kombat has been doing the Sydney circuit for a while now but has really pushed it a bit harder over the last little bit, supporting some of the biggest acts, headlining awesome nights and now releasing EP's under some of the most respected Dubstep labels in the world.
Here's an interview with Kombat plus a few bootlegs and goodies at the bottom of this post!
Enjoy.
-------------------------------------------------
So your "Follow me down" EP is just about to drop! How long were you working on it for and who have you collaborated with on it?
Yes it is and I am very excited! I spent a lot of hours on the tunes for the EP, basically took a couple of months between organising vocalists, writing and mixing down the tunes. The EP features collaborations with WhoAmI and three very talented vocalists, Autumn, Messinian and Maksim. It was a pleasure to work with them and I am sure that the EP would not be a success without them!
Is most of your studio time with KPC these days or are you focusing more on Kombat?
I have been focusing on a lot of solo Kombat stuff recently to improve my own sound and progress as an artist. KPC has taken a break for a couple of months, between Kurk Kokane writing his EP (which has just dropped on Beatport by the way!) and me completing my solo EP we decided to build our personal profiles before the next KPC album. But that break is over so there will definitely be a lot of new KPC tunes in the next couple of months so look out for it! We actually have a new remix of Dirty Talk and Messinian’s tune Don Didded coming out on November 21st on Play Me Records, here's a teaser for that!
DIRTY TALK Ft. Messinian - Don Didded (KPC Remix) by KPC KREW
Tell us about your musical journey, where and what kinds of music have you played throughout your career and where do you see it going from here?
I was into all sorts of different genres as a kid from G Funk (BIG Influence) to Hardcore Rock so I was never close minded. As far as musical knowledge goes I studied piano at a young age and began drumming soon after. As a DJ, Dubstep was my first genre but if you have seen some of my sets you would notice I play a fair few different genres like Drum n Bass, Moombah, Hip Hop, Electro and lots of old school anthems! Bass heavy music definitely defines the future, music that you can not only hear but feel.
What software and plug-ins are you using?
My weapons of choice are Ableton Live, NI Massive, Camelphat and a few standard effects within Ableton.
How did you hook up with Play Me Records and Ultragore Records?
When KPC was first formed we sent two of our new tracks to friend and fellow producer F3tch who turned us onto Play Me Records. They loved the tunes and asked us for a whole EP! In regards to Ultragore, I came in contact with Ryan from Helicopter Showdown when he was in Australia touring, we jumped in the studio together worked on a tune, chilled and I showed him some of my tracks. Helicopter Showdown are part owners of Ultragore Recordings so they didn’t hesitate to sign my new EP, which I was ecstatic about!
In your opinion, has the music scene in Australia changed since you started? If so, is it for the better or worse?
When I first started the scene was tiny, it was still an underground form of music. These days Dubstep/Drum n Bass is one of the fastest growing styles of music, and I don’t wonder why. The scene has definitely changed for the better and it is awesome to see a dance floor full of people there for the pure enjoyment of music! We also have lots of amazing producers around now and I am positive it won’t be long till Australia owns bass heavy music.
Give us your five favourite tracks to play at the moment.
1. SPL & Triage - Valhalla
2. Kurk Kokane Feat Messinian – Speakers on Blast
3. Syrebral – Purgatory
4. Example – Midnight Run (Kombat & Aztec Remix)
5. DJ Shadow – Midnight in a Perfect World (Bruxism & Pop the Hatch Remix)
If you could be invisible for 24hours, what would you do?
Fight crime in the nude.
Vinyl or Digital?
I would have to say digital, it’s hard to find good reliable vinyl turntables in a club today!
And finally, what is coming up for Kombat?
A whole lot of originals, remixes, free downloads and some huge collaborations with artists like Kurk Kokane, WhoAmI, Pop The Hatch and Syrebral!!! To celebrate the release of my EP, I will be giving out a free tune a week till the release so make sure you like the facebook fan page!
