- GETTING DOWN WITH DOWNLINK PART 2 -

He's back again!

Since the last time I interviewed Downlink (May 2010) his career has absolutely exploded. This young Canadian has has done several tours around the U.S.A. and other far corners of the globe, made some of Dubstep's biggest anthems, Collaborated with some of the most respected artists and bands out there and he still makes the time to sit down and have a catch up session with Dubstep Democracy to update his fans on the crazy life he is living.

So boys and girls here is the most updated interview with Downlink

PLUS

His mind blowing new annual MIXTAPE!

1. So since we spoke to you last in May 2010, you seem to have taken your career to a complete other level. Regular releases and EP's toping the beatport charts, huge tours with Excision, Datsik and even acts as big as Korn, traveling around the world doing shows everywhere... This has all happened so fast, surely at times you must look back and just think, wow! Tell us how you feel about all this...

I'm really happy with the success I've had over the past year. It's been really surreal in some senses but in other senses it feels deserved. I put in a lot of time, and I have to say that I'm still not really where I'd like to be. I'm hoping to make 2012 an even bigger year. I want to put out a lot more new music in 2012, and hopefully I come up with some amazing new material to help bring me to an even higher level.

2. Now that you've traveled around with your music quite a lot, what are some shows that really stood out to you?

Any time you are playing to a sold out venue of around 4 - 5 thousand people you are pretty stoked. There were a few shows like that on the Korn tour and those were pretty fun. Also, the EDC events that I played last year were pretty cool as well. Denver is always a great time. The whole subsonic tour with Excision and Antiserum was so fun too. There's really been way too many fun shows! I love it.

3. The Electronic music scene is constantly changing--very quickly--and you seem to be riding the storm, producing music at all different tempo's. How do you feel about this and do you enjoy changing it up?

I love changing it up and I feel that its important to be versatile in this new emerging culture of bass music. There are a lot of dubstep purists out there that hate on people who are producing other tempos but they have got to learn to keep an open mind. You don't get anywhere by doing the same thing over and over again. That being said, I never want to alienate my core audience and I will always provide them with that classic downlink sound in the form of a dustup banger from time to time.

4. Last year you said you were mainly using Logic while rewiring Reason + Massive. Is this still your regular set up or have you changed it up?

I haven't honestly used too much lately. Mostly just Logic these days. I've discovered numerous plugins and I've expanded my arsenal of soft synths though. It's a lot of fun to experiment with new plugins and try new combinations and effects chains. Any producer out there knows the geekery and joy of playing around with new plugins.

5. Give us your 5 favourite tracks to play right now...

1. Excision & Downlink - Crowd Control 2. Krome & Time - The License (Doctor P Remix) 3. Downlink - Factory (both the Ajapai rmx and the Liquid Stranger rmx) 4. Downlink - Party Alarm
5. Dillon Francis - IDGAFOS

6. One artist in the world whose brain you would love to pick...

Probably Tipper. That guys production skills are unbelievable and his music is just plain wicked.

7. When was it that you realized that your career as a producer was really going to take off?

I don't think there really was a defining moment. It all kind of just came about and then suddenly I realized, "hey I don't need to 'work' anymore, I can just do music". I feel extremely blessed to have gotten to this point in life. It took a lot of dedication and work, but its definitely paying off now.

8. When is the next time we can expect you in Australia?  I will be over there for the Creamfields festival this year in April / May. Make sure all you bassheads come to the show because myself and Excision will both be there, and we will not disappoint.

9. If you had to live in an aisle of a supermarket, which one would it be?

Tough call. Probably the produce section or natural foods aisle. Organic all the way baby!!!

10. Any Finally, whats next for Downlink???

I have a question. Do you know if this kind of music is mixed with metal (for example, with guitars?)
can you suggest some names?
